Athough writings about music are a substantial part ofWitold Lutoslawski's
creative output, they have not so far been the subject of a thorough study. The
fact that they are dispersed in various sources makes this task even more difficult.
Moreover, many of his writings remain unpublished to this day, so that
only a complete edition of them would allow a deep insight into their various
topics and aspects. To provide a fuller accounting of Lutoslawski's writings
on music is the main goal of the present collection, which, for the first time,
includes his most important texts arranged in six parts, as follows: (1) writings
on beauty, musical form, compositional technique, and perception; (2) essays
on his own works; (3) essays on composers and musicians; (4) various opinions
on contemporary music in Poland and abroad; (5) occasional speeches; and (6)
his artistic diary from the years 1959-1984.
