El escritor escocés Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) es autor de algunas de las historias fantásticas y de aventuras más populares, como Treasure lsland (1883) y Tlze Strange Case of Dr. ]ekyll and M1: Hyde (1886). Todas sus obras han conocido brillantes adaptaciones cinematográficas y en el caso del Dr. Jekyll destacan, entre otras, la versión del director Rouben Mamoulian, en 1931, con Fredric March como protagonista, y la de Víctor Fleming, en 1941, con Spencer Tracy. En 1996 el director Stephen Frears llevó a cabo una nueva adaptación con Julia Roberts interpretando a Mary Reilly, la fiel sirvienta del Dr. Jekyll, quien daba titulo al filme.
