The most iconic German aircraft of the Second World War, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 was the Luftwaffe’s principal fighter from 1939 until 1942 when the more superior Focke-Wulf Fw 190 came into greater prominence.

The Bf 109 served in every theatre of the war, though in this book the author examines the period of Operations on all fronts from 1941 onwards through to VE-Day in 1945 including such events as the Luftwaffe's Tip and Run Fighter Bomber Air Raids (1941-44), Attacks during the 1944 D-Day Invasion and immediately afterwards as well as events on the Eastern Front (1941-45).
In the later years of the Air war, the Bf 109 fought with some degree of success in the defence of Germany against Allied bombers in both daylight and night time attacks.

The Bf 109 was the most produced fighter aircraft type by either the Axis or Allied Air Forces, Additionally it has more aerial Victories than any other aircraft type flown operationally during the entire war.

The Bf 109 was flown by the three top-scoring fighter aces of the war:

Erich Hartmann (1922-1993), the top-scoring fighter pilot of all time who destroyed 352 enemy aircraft;

Gerhard Barkhorn (1918-1983) with 301 Aircraft Destroyed;

Günther Rall (1918-2009) with 275 Aircraft Destroyed.

All of them flew their Operations with the 'elite' Luftwaffe Gruppen JG 52, a unit which exclusively flew the Bf 109 and was credited with over 10,000 Aircraft Destroyed - chiefly but not only on the Eastern Front.
The Bf 109 was also supplied to several of Germany's Axis allies, including Finland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, and Slovakia.
