The Cancer Genetics Network (CGN) is a national (US) network of centers specializing in the study of inherited predisposition to cancer. The resource is available to the research community at large to support studies on the genetic basis of human cancer susceptibility, integration of this information into medical practice, and psychosocial, ethical, legal and public health issues associated with human genetics. As of May 2002, the CGN contained data on over 15,000 participants, the majority of whom were of Non-Hispanic White/Caucasian ethnicity. However, these figures did not represent the general public of the participating sites, and it was decided to take action to improve recruitment of individuals of minority populations. This special issue features the efforts undertaken to enhance ethnic minority participation in the registry and the resulting improvements.
