In 2013, we edited the first edition of this book to provide an overview of challenges and developments in digital image forensics. This was the first book on the topic providing a comprehensive review of prominent research themes as well as the perspectives of legal professionals and forensic practitioners. Since then, the research in this field has expanded dramatically. On one hand, the volume of multimedia content generated and exchanged over the Internet increased hugely. Images and videos represent an ever-increasing share of the data traveling on the net and the preferred communications means for most users, especially of the younger generations.
Therefore, they are also the preferred target of malicious attacks. On the other hand, with the advent of deep learning, attacking multimedia is becoming easier and easier. Ten years ago, manipulating an image in a credible way required uncommon technical skills and significant efforts. Manipulating a video, beyond trivial framelevel
operations, was possible only for movie productions. This scenario has radically changed now, and multimedia manipulation is at anyone’s reach. Sophisticated tools based on autoencoders or generative adversarial networks are freely available, as well as huge datasets to train them at will. Deepfakes have become commonplace and represent a real and growing menace for the integrity of information, with repercussions on various sectors of society, from the economy to journalism to politics. And these problems can only worsen as new and increasingly sophisticated forms of manipulation are taking shape.
We organized the book into three main parts following a brief introduction of development in imaging technologies. The first part will provide an overview of key findings related to the attribution problem. The work pertaining to the integrity of images and videos is collated in the second part. The last part features work on combatting adversarial techniques that rise as a significant challenge
