Most of us are well acquainted with Frank Lloyd Wright as America’s foremost Architect, but little is known of the horror and tragedy that almost destroys his life during his middle age.
Wright is devastated when, in the summer of 1914, he learns of the gruesome ax murders, assaults and arson that occurred at Taliesin, his home and studio, located outside of Spring Green, Wisconsin; seven people died horribly and two others were seriously injured. Among the dead are Wright’s illicit lover for whom he had deserted his wife and six children, Mamah Borthwick Cheney, and her young son and daughter. The suspect is Julian Carlton, the family’s Negro handy man and butler. Carlton is captured and tortured; feelings run hot and the racially prejudiced mob attempts to lynch him. Carlton dies in jail several months after the crime, never confessing and having never been able to stand trial.
Is the grisly murder of Wright’s strong willed, feminist lover, her children and the others just the unfortunate result of the actions of the butler gone mad or were there other, even more insidious and malevolent forces at work? Is the Negro butler a crazed, bloodthirsty fiend as charged by the Sheriff’s Department or a victim of racial hatred…or both?
Frank Lloyd Wright’s life and career were changed forever. Wright requires every ounce of his will to keep himself and his craft from drifting out of control. He realizes his very existence is threatened and reaches out for help… and new love from a mysterious woman who recently entered his life.
Murder by Design fictionally depicts Wright’s unique and flamboyant life and career in the early twentieth century, his scandalous relationship with Mamah Borthwick and suspensefully progresses through the horrific events of that summer and their unexpected aftermath.
