"The Nazis entered this war under the rather childish delusion that they were going to bomb everyone else, and nobody was going to bomb them. At Rotterdam, London, Warsaw, and half a hundred other places, they put their rather naive theory into operation. They sowed the wind, and now they are going to reap the whirlwind''.

Arthur T. Harris AOC-In-C RAF Bomber Command, 1942.

"It's all over now; we straggle through the ops room to go to breakfast. Further Aircrews have come in – crews late because they had been lost, or been shot up by FLAK or Night Fighters, or lost engines. Some faces have not yet appeared – probably will never appear''.

Don Charlwood RAAF, Navigator, 103 RAF Squadron - 1942.

For much of World War II all of the UK provided the only Western European Base from which the combined (after 1942) Allied Air Forces and their respective high commands could take the war into occupied Europe and in time to the very heart of the Axis, Hitler's Third Reich and Mussolini's Fascist Italy. The American USAAF had two forces at their disposal - The Eighth AF in the UK and the often overlooked Ninth AF in the Middle East and Italy. One force concentrated on targets in Western Europe, while the other struck targets in Italy and throughout Eastern Europe in massed daylight raids. In concert with these attacks RAF Bomber Command concentrated on night attacks all across Europe, mainly at night, but also when required in daylight. As well as dropping the largest conventional bomb of the entire war (22000lb), the RAF unlike the Americans had representatives from almost every Allied nation inside its force of Bomber Aircrews. Written by former RAF Bomber Pilot Jack Currie and Aviation Author and Photographer Philip Kaplan this informative and illustrated history will convey what it was like for the men and women that made up the Allied Air Forces.
