The prolific Alers adds to her African American Hideaway Legacy romance series the tale of Michael Kirkland, on leave from the Pentagon, and Jolene Walker, who runs the Sanctuary, an organization that helps women who are victims of domestic violence and substance abuse. Because Jolene's own marriage had fallen apart when she tried, unsuccessfully, to save her identical twin from the abusive man who was ultimately responsible for her death, she has had no desire for romantic entanglements. Her longtime friend Paige, however, pairs her up, blind-date style, with Michael at a Georgetown party. Although Alers' detailed descriptions of clothing, food, and furnishings read at times like "lifestyles of the rich and African American," the larger-than-life personalities of Michael and Jolene are enticing, and the skillful blend of important issues, the suspense involving a potential killer, and Michael's incredible wealth and illustrious family add up to an entertaining read.
