PROLOGUE
He looks so peaceful on the back seat. Curled on his side, eyes closed, long lashes dark against his pale skin. Everything about him so tiny and perfect. He doesn’t belong here.
But that doesn’t stop him from being lifted from the car, his body limp and surprisingly heavy as he’s carried through the night, the way lit only by the ethereal glow of moonlight filtered through thick clouds above as he’s taken to a place where the sun never shines, a spot perpetually stuck in the shadow of a slumbering giant. But the mountain feels awake now, a menacing shadow at their back, a silent witness to what’s about to happen.

Goosebumps tighten their skin. Adjusting their grip on the boy, they continue on, just them and the mountain, watching at their back.
And then they reach it. The end of the dock.
They squint out over the ice that spreads along the top of the water like a toxic oil slick. April, and the only place the lake is still frozen is here, in this evil little corner eclipsed by the stony peak.
Spotting what they were hoping for, a thin patch on the surface, they squat and hold the child out, over the weak spot. .....And then it’s done. This night never happened.
