This volume is the distillation of close to two decades of efforts to improve.
The authors and I share these efforts in the form of experiences passed on
by our mentors, from our colleagues, and through the years of selfexploration
as we have striven toward the elusive goal of mastery. At its
roots, early innovative urogynecologic procedures essentially helped define
the emerging discipline of surgical gynecology in the early 19th century.
For over a hundred years practitioners caring for women with prolapse and
incontinence have struggled to find durable solutions to these most common
and at times the most debilitating medical and social afflictions. The field of
Urogynecology (now Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery)
was fundamentally established to try to understand how to do things better
The purpose of this volume is to detail a practical yet thoughtfulapproach to the surgical management of pelvic floor disorders. Current
urogynecology is minimally invasive surgery at its core. The procedures
and techniques outlined will focus on the innovations that preserve this
tenant. For practical purposes we break surgical techniques by
compartment, recognizing the interdependency of concomitant procedures
to address multi-compartment problems. We present the established
traditional approaches with a nod toward innovation with graft
augmentation and application of robotics.
