Complicated family relationships are set against a background of the fall of the Berlin Wall and reunifiation of Germany in this affecting historical novel
.
Karo’s dad is dead—or so she believes—and when a stranger comes to the door one day looking for her mother, Karo wants nothing to do with this man. But Karo’s mother won’t see sense. She starts to spend more and more time with this strange man from her past, and can’t see how unhappy it is all making her daughter. Karo squabbles with her friend, starts to skip school, she even runs away to her grandfather, but nothing she can do seems to have any effect on her changing family.
.
Set in Hamburg after the fall of the Berlin Wall, this is a story of how international events can affect the everyday lives of ordinary families. Chosen for the IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) Honor List, Translation Category, this work has an international feel and will broaden horizons for the reader.
.First, a few small things you need to know…
.
This story is set in Hamburg, in northern Germany, in 1990, shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall. (That’s important for the story, but you can find out about it for yourself.)
.
Hamburg is on the River Elbe and its small tributary, the Alster. There are also many Alster canals. But when people in Hamburg speak about the Alster they mean the two lakes right in the heart of the city: the Inner Alster and the Outer Alster.
.
In Hamburg, as in most European cities, many families live in flats in apartment buildings rather than in separate houses.
.
Children in Germany usually change from primary to secondary school at the age of ten. School starts every day at eight o’clock. At the time this story takes place, lessons used to finish at lunchtime. (Nowadays they go on into the afternoon, like in Ireland.)
.
Oh, yes, and the name Rike is pronounced Reeka. The other names are more or less the same as they would be pronounced in English.
.
And that’s enough info: now for the story…
