Peacetime Robert Edric by Robert Edric 9780552772068, 0552772062 instant download after payment.

Robert Edric captures with breathtaking economy the sense of portent and uncertainty shared by a community in the aftermath of conflict.

Late summer 1946: the Wash on the Fenland coast. Into a suspicious and isolated community comes James Mercer, until recently a serving captain in the Engineers. As the summer dies, animosities flare, prejudices and enmities are burnished - and Mercer finds himself caught in the centre as events quicken to their violent and unexpected conclusion.

"A despairing portrait of humanity as it exists on Britain’s Fenland coast at the end of WWII... The war, Mercer observes, “still clung to everything it had once touched.” With spare, lean prose, British novelist Edric (The Broken Lands, 2001, etc.) creates a haunting and disturbing meditation about an empty, abandoned world passing through a meaningless transition."  - Kirkus Reviews

Robert Edric is the pseudonym of Gary Edric Armitage and he writes under both names. He is a prolific author who never stints on quality, as evidenced by his 2002 and 2006 long listings.  He has published 28 novels since 1985 including My Own Worst Enemy, a memoir of his tough upbringing in Sheffield in the 1960s.
