Peak performance has been a large part of my life for over 30 years. Starting with sports and academic performance in high school, I realized there were vast differences in how people performed. While one athlete seemed to stand out as an all-star, another who looked equally fit and strong, barely made the cut for the team. While one student in a class might seem to skip through school with straight As, the person sitting next to them might be borderline failing. What is the difference in these varying degrees of performance? Does one possess some Apollonian strength and rational order that propels them to greater success, or is there some Dionysian passion creating an emotionally-charged power that allows an individual to perform with more successful outcomes? Are some people born with some skill that allows them to succeed more than others? Is it intelligence, hard work, or something else that is the main determinant of peak performance? I might not have all the answers to these questions, but one thing I do believe with every cell in my body is that everyone—yes, everyone—has the ability to perform at peak levels and reach any dream they can envision.
