The rapid development of industry and the continuous growth of population inevitably bring about energy shortage and environmental pollution. These two global crises have restricted the sustainable development of society and become the focus of worldwide attention. Solar energy is recognised as a renewable and clean energy, which can meet the energy needs of human beings today and into the future. Photo-driven photocatalysis, photoelectron catalysis and photovoltaic catalysis have been regarded as the most important technologies to solve energy and environmental problems as they can directly utilise sunlight to drive energy conversion, organic synthesis and pollutant degradation. Due to their unique structure, two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials can enhance the intrinsic properties of and produce multiple properties different from their three-dimensional (3D) counterparts, such as large specific surface area, excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, abundant exposed catalytically active sites, great carrier mobility, etc. Among the various applications benefiting from these unique properties, 2D nanomaterials have shown promising activity as photo(electron)catalysts for solar-driven reactions. In this context, the synthesis of 2D nanomaterials with higher photocatalytic activity plays a vital role in their successful applications. Synthesis methods and reaction exploration of 2D nanomaterials have become research hotspots. On the basis of the latest research, this book reviews the progress of research on photocatalysis by 2D nanomaterials in five chapters from the perspectives of material design, performance improvement and understanding of the mechanism. In Chapter 1, the authors Prof. Zhao and Prof. Duan from Beijing University of Chemical Technology and Tsinghua University focus on the photocatalytic synthesis of fine chemicals and describe in detail the development course of several organic reactions via photocatalysis using 2D nanomaterials.
