''The pituitary is referred to as the master gland, emphasizing its critical role in endocrine physiology as the key intermediary between the central nervous system and most of the peripheral endocrine glands. Optimal pituitary function is vital for normal growth and development, sexual function and fertility, and healthy aging. Where pituitary hormone excess or deficiency is discovered, successful medical management entails an in-depth understanding of hormonal interactions together with a patient-centered approach, considering age, desire for fertility, and the health consequences of hormone abnormalities, including quality of life. When pituitary tumors are responsible for hormone abnormalities, a multidisciplinary approach is necessary, which includes a dialogue between endocrinology, neurosurgery, neuro-ophthalmology, and radiation oncology, among other specialties.

Our intent was to compile a collection of chapters that would provide a comprehensive, case-based approach to the diagnosis and management of pituitary disorders that are encountered in clinical practice. The organization of the chapters is intended to move through each stage of the lifecycle: from childhood to adolescence, through fertile years and adulthood, to older age. We have been privileged to have received contributions from many of the world’s pituitary experts, and we are particularly grateful for their efforts during a pandemic, where they had to take on additional roles and responsibilities. Our hope is that this book will be a practical resource for trainees and practicing clinicians from many specialties including pediatricians, internists, endocrinologists, gynecologists, and neurosurgeons.
