The witch had read as little Lovecraft as possible, but thanks to Mother Mayhem, she’d been compelled to skim his greatest hits. Keziah Mason was the name of a character in at least one of his tales, a charming specimen called “The Dreams in the Witch House.” In the story, a college student took an attic room in an old house and had a series of increasingly unhinged run-ins with Keziah, an evil witch, and her human-faced familiar, Brown Jenkin. Good ol’ HPL had rolled out all the usual witch stereotypes. Keziah had a hunched spine, a hooked nose, a guttural voice, and . . . Oh, Howie, you weapons-grade asshole. “I’m gonna go out on a limb here and assume you didn’t actually sacrifice a baby to Azathoth?” Jenkin leaped to his feet and broke into a fit of barks that brought Keyser Söze charging into the kitchen at a dead run. Keyser’s fur was so puffed up he was almost spherical. He launched himself at the bedraggled dog-rat like a cannonball. The witch barely managed to snatch him out of midair and clasp him to her chest. “Base slander!” Keziah growled. “That chicken-hearted, evil-tongued liar utterly ruined my good name.” Jenkin stood on trembling legs, panting with rage.
