It is a response to challenges and opportunities facing the country regarding the need for a well-qualified pool of STEM graduates, and a 2009 call by President Obama to ensure that the U.S. remains a leader in STEM education in the decades to come. PCAST (President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology) assembled a Working Group of experts in curriculum development and implementation, school administration, teacher preparation and professional development, effective teaching, out-of-school activities, and educational technology. In addition, PCAST worked with the Office of Management and Budget and the Science and Technology Policy Institute to analyze Federal programs in STEM education.
