32 reviewsReviewer NG 5.0 out of 5 stars What an excellent book Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2021 I was astonished at this level of book from an unknown author. At the level of John Ringo and David Weber. So glad I bought it. Hazard King had always wanted to be an Imperial Fleet officer, just like his father. That was always going to be complicated since he was a Prince of the Realm. Complicated turned into almost impossible when the Empress is attacked. What is a simple lieutenant supposed to do with his mother in a coma, a seemingly invincible enemy on the offensive, a darkness from the past stirring and his paranoid older brother trying to assassinate him. The lieutenant remembers his oath and with a former spy, a handful of Marines, his uncle and most importantly, his father, decides to defend the Empire from all enemies whether foreign or domestic.
This is the first revision I have made to the original book. In the course of writing the second book, and in getting this book ready for an Audible version, I found a ton of things I could have done better. Hey, I am a first-time writer after all. I also made changes based on comments, both good and bad, that were made in the written reviews. The story has not changed at all, just a few editorial fixes. Most importantly, I incorporated imperial dates to help readers understand the unusual way that I begin the book.
This book contains space battles and gunfights, like most science fiction novels, but it is ultimately about people. The characters I have tried to create are like family to me, and they are the core of the book. I wanted to show that the core values most of have and admire in others will still be present in the future. While necessary to explain some of the science involved, I tried hard not to get bogged down in it. For the space battles, which frankly I am very proud of, I tried to copy David Weber’s style in making it both exciting and realistic. I hope you enjoy, and please leave comments.
