Foreword
The past two decades have seen a literal explosion of literature
in the field of hormone receptors. Over 1,000 references each
can be consulted in specialized journals for receptors of all
classes of steroid hormones though fewer are available with
mineralocorticoids. Reviews, congress proceedings, serialized
advances, treatises, are all proliferating abundantly and occupy
library shelves, waiting to be read 'one of these days'.
The day unfortunately never dawns as one thing leads to another.
The task to keep abreast in related concepts and methodologies
is exasperating even for the insiders in the field, much less
for newcomers who wish to make a first pass in recepterology.
The present volume was planned as a first attempt to synthesizing
this exciting and important field. A single authority in each
hormone class was given the overwhelming task of digesting all
important concepts in his area and attempt an overview there-
after both for fundamentalists and clinicians. This pioneering
effort at synthesis can be a starting point both for the in-
volved scientist seeking quick information in his particular
and related areas, and an advanced student who 'doesn't know
where to begin'. It is thus hoped that a major new reference
source has been compiled.
The first volume has centered on steroid hormones, including
Vitamin D, and a few other areas where contemporary recepterology
has made important and rapid progress these past few years. A
subsequent volume may pull together all protein hormones under a
single cover.
Finally, I hope that the reader would join me in commending
all authors for their painstaking and admirable effort, and
for the great toll it put on their time. Despite other heavy
commitments, and the particular difficulty in overviewing rather
than simply reviewing research from their own laboratories,
authors have fulfilled a pledge to provide new dimensions in
scientific information transmission. The anticipated appreciation
of the reader would surely justify the birth pangs
