The book is arranged in three parts. Part I is divided into chapters covering some of the
major sub-disciplines most commonly chosen by students for their projects. They do not
always map onto a single undergraduate module or conventional sub-area of linguistics,
because, in our experience, projects don’t do this either. But it should not be too difficult
to make the connections back to introductory textbooks or class notes. Within each of
these chapters there is a brief review of introductory texts, a list of major journals and a
brief account of the major research areas. Key terms in bold font can be used to find
information in printed book indexes or via electronic search engines. There are also over
300 practical suggestions for projects. These are specifically aimed at the needs of the
student who is required to engage with data of some kind, but who is not expecting to

make an original contribution to the field (though some of the projects undoubtedly could
lead to this if handled well).
Part II contains chapters on methodology, which provide techniques and guidance on
how to set up and run research. The final part contains tools: guidance in practical
procedures, and specific information that is often needed but not always easy to find.
But, before all that, there is an introductory chapter intended to set the scene and help
the reader orientate him-/herself. We strongly recommend that this chapter is read before
anything else.
