Sure enough, in the distance Trent spotted the three gunmen climbing up the trail. His pulse raced.
Any noise at this point could alert them to movement inside the cabin. “Come,” he ordered his K-9, Rex. He tiptoed to Brooke’s side and touched her shoulder.
“Brooke, wake up.” Her eyes popped open. He put a finger to his lips. “Shhh, they’re back and headed this way. Implement plan B.”
She gasped and stared at him, wide-eyed. “What’s plan B?”
“Out the back door and hide. Be quiet.” He rushed to the window. Goose bumps crawled up his spine. He could throw a rock and hit them. They were close. Too close.
He hooked the leash on Rex’s collar. The dog growled. “I know. Quiet. I’ll let you know if I need your assistance.”
Brooke slid to her feet, holding her belly. Poor Brooke. Just when she should be eagerly anticipating the arrival of her newborn, she was running for her life...and the life of her baby.
