Watching Claire drive away, I barely noticed the headlights flicking on
twenty feet in front of me.
I stepped off the curb and started to cross the
street to my house, but stopped when the same car gunned its engine and
switched over to high beams. With a squeal of tires, the thing headed
straight for me. I froze a moment in the blinding light and deafening roar,
then lurched into action. I spun, bounded two strides, and dove back onto
the grass. I rolled toward the sidewalk, just as the tires hopped the curb and
tore through the wet grass a foot from my head.
From my back, I watched the car skid back onto the road and scream
down the street. I stared at its shrinking taillights, too stunned to get up and
off the sidewalk. I wondered if it would turn and come back for me, but its
wail died down and the taillights faded into the darkness.
