This book is neither a critique of comfort food nor a condemnation of fast food. Our tone is one of compassion and camaraderie.
We all share this world, and it’s a world where Dr. Yum’s pediatrics office is flanked by a pair of fast-food restaurants, and where Coach Mel taught her children to drink from a straw at one of America’s most popular hamburger chains. While there are plenty of healthy “kid food” alternatives discussed in this book, the reality is that we authors—and our own families—have enjoyed a few chicken nuggets from time to time, with extra sweet-and-sour sauce to boot. Frankly, it’s a part of the American culture to devour a hot dog at the ballpark or “buttered” popcorn at the movies.                       Healthy? No. Delicious? Of course! But for many of our kids today, eating like this isn’t the occasional treat. They’re bombarded with unhealthy foods from a very early age, thanks to a society that has become focused on convenience, constant snacking, and meals on the run. Most of the food in our world is processed for longer shelf life, and sacrifices nutrition for taste. And if you have a child who falls anywhere on the spectrum of “picky eating,” America’s food culture reinforces this “tasty treat” eating pattern. In our fast-paced lives, it’s easy to allow our children to overindulge or rely on unhealthy options, because we know they’ll enjoy them and, importantly, actually eat them. Even if you are the parent who has already started your child on the path to healthy eating, it may be only a matter of time before your kids are faced with the actuality of a junk-food culture. Reality bites: It’s a chicken-nugget world out there, and it’s unlikely to change overnight.
