Tucker Farrell is a drifter with a past he wants to forget and he has no immediate plans for his future. He dreams of buying land in Oregon, but he has no means by which to do it. Tucker escapes being lynched by a gang of Mexican desperadoes as a flock of black birds fly overhead. He takes off for the mountains and falls to a ledge below and is knocked unconscious. A renegade band of Arapaho Indians and the Mexican desperadoes are close on their heels when Luce dies. Raven and Tucker do as they were told and the secret to the treasure is revealed. Raven and Tucker cannot put aside their feelings for each other. As their awareness for each other grows, Raven puts herself and her need for Tucker above her destiny and she is ashamed of her weakness.
