Robert Greville, Lord Brooke (1608–1643), adopted son of the Elizabethan poet Fulke Greville, is an intriguing figure of the era that Whitehead called “the century of genius.” The author of two philosophical treatises, a soldier of distinction in the Parliamentary army, Brooke served in both houses of Parliament, and took a leading part in several colonizing enterprises promoted by the Puritans. One of these colonies, that of Saybrook, Connecticut, still bears his name, along with that of his older compatriot, Lord Saye.

In providing the first full evaluation of this appealing figure, Robert Strider gives a biographical account tracing Brooke’s ancestry and education, his colonizing activities, his activities as a Puritan, his record in public life, and the dramatic manner of his death. Full consideration is given to Brooke’s writings, to their importance at that time and later, and to the reasons why Milton found Brooke’s work significant.
