0 reviewsA large number of books have been written about Kashmir in the recent past.
Modern Kashmir has in fact been a writers’ paradise. The situation in Kashmir was not normal, in the conventional sense of that word, ever since the Partition of the subcontinent. However, the situation turned worse from the early 1990s onwards with the social and economic fabric coming under intense strain. The turbulence which ensued spawned a huge publishing industry. Most of these books are written by non-Kashmiris not equipped with the lived experience of the situation. And most of them used political registers to inscribe their thoughts, given the charged political atmosphere of Kashmir. Hence there are books about the political genesis of the conflict, implications of the political conflict especially the human suffering consequent upon the rise of the conflict, contentious arguments and counter-arguments about a particular nationalistic position. In the process an entire library has come up for study. A primer on Kashmir, for a newcomer, might include scores of books to eventually make their way into almost nowhere. A maze of narratives has been created, in which the reader feels lost for direction. However, this book meets the promise of taking the reader out of the maze.
