Christmas Eve is chilly every year, although last year was an
exception. It was cold—the temperature dropped into the low twenties.
Not this year. The air feels almost refreshing as we step into the night—
it’s only slightly below freezing. We quickly realize, however, that we
need to watch where we put our feet—the pavement is slippery in spots.
Remnants of the afternoon drizzle must have turned to ice when
darkness fell.Maria descends briskly down the stairs, and waits for me by the
iron gate. I shut the ten-foot-high wooden sanctuary doors and lock
them. I glance up at the church—its front wall ascends high into the
night sky. Built in the mid nineteenth century, the gothic architecture of
St Luke’s Catholic Church gives it a hint of romantic whimsy juxtaposed
by the tingly, slightly creepy feeling of a haunted history. The dark
walls climb eight stories high on the west wing where a small tower
houses a large bronze bell that rings three times a day—at dawn,
midday, and dusk.I hurry to catch up with Maria, my long legs descend the steps
two at a time. Maria opens the rod iron gate, which groans ungratefully
in the cold. She pulls at a newspaper that has been wedged between the
bars by the winter wind. She scans it for a moment or two, tosses it into
a recycling bin, and then remarks with exasperation in her voice, “A
house caught fire and of course it was across the street from the Braden
house.” She crosses her arms and continues. “A young black couple—
both of them killed. They’re blaming it on a space heater. What a load
of bullshit. I bet this is another one of those hate crimes made to look
like an accident.”
