The two young women floated on air beds on the still waters of the swimming pool. They wore bikinis and their bodies were golden.
‘Tans are supposed to be vulgar,’ said the one with short dark hair.
Her companion, a blonde, laughed.
‘That’s propaganda put about by people who are white.’
They floated some more, as if drained of energy by the sun.
‘Thirty,’ the blonde said. ‘You’re going to be thirty. Over the hill. The concept is gross!’
‘I know. It feels ancient. Where did it all go?’
‘On having a good time?’
They laughed.
‘How about,’ the blonde said, speculatively, ‘going out with a bang?’
The pause lasted long enough to be suggestive and they both burst out laughing.
‘You don’t mean . . . the hired help?’
‘John is not hired help. But if you insist, there’s always Manuel . . .’
‘Ughh!’ She shuddered theatrically. ‘God. He’s so fat. It makes you wonder how he could do it.’
‘Cooks are supposed to be fat. And if you want to discover how he does it, I can arrange a demonstration.’
‘Don’t be disgusting. I’ll stick with John.’
‘You will?’
‘Well. . . we’ll see. There’s another ten days yet. A lot can happen.’
‘Ten days to thirty. God, I’d kill myself,’ the blonde said.
‘You’ll get there, one day. Anyway, it’s the age that life begins at.’
‘More propaganda, put about by people who are old. I’d rather go out with a bang.’
Her friend laughed.
‘I’ll try to arrange it.’
