on singularities in various fields. Developments in the study of singularities in optics,
especially phase singularities, and a timeline account are provided. Important topics
such as the basics of singularities, their types, properties, generation, detection,
applications and emerging research trends are covered in this book. Though this
book mainly concentrates on phase singularities, toward the end two chapters on
polarization singularities are included. Polarization singularities can be treated as
superpositions of vortex fields on a polarization basis. However, the singularities on
non-linear media and coherence singularities are not included, since the emphasis is
on waves in linear media and on electromagnetic fields and not on defining new
complex functions in which similar structures can be found.
