AUTHORS' NOTE
Local historians in various towns, most of them in
Westchester County, New York, have argued for ages about
what town or village was author Washington Irving's
inspiration for the hamlet featured in his famous story "The
Legend of Sleepy Hollow." For years, North Tarrytown, New
York stood firm in their claim as the main influence on the
creation of that fictional town. In 1996, the village changed
its name, officially, to Sleepy Hollow. If you visit Sleepy
Hollow now, you'll see signs everywhere promoting the
name and the image of the Headless Horseman, a boon to
tourism. Despite the horror of the original tale, there seems
something charming about the legend.
For the moment.
Meanwhile, readers who are familiar with Sleepy Hollow,
New York (where Golden lived for three years in the early
nineties) will notice that while some familiar landmarks are
included, many liberties have been taken with the
geography of the place.
We won't tell if you won't
