What has been the effect of the digital age on sports journalism and how and why has that changed from the 1700s when the major technology was hand-powered printing presses? It is with those things in mind that this book was written. It is about the past, the present, and, to some extent, the future of American sports journalism. But
it is more than just a journalism history; it is a tale of who we are as Americans and how we spend our leisure time. In chronicling sports, journalists can reveal our mores and social conditions and give us insights into such things as nationalism, individualism, capitalism, racism, and sexism.
Most Americans are aware of sports stories that went far beyond what happened in a game: concussions in football, drugs in baseball and track and field, cheating by colleges and universities to get the best football and basketball players, and the sexual abuse by coaches of female gymnasts and other athletes. Not long
ago these types of sports stories were rarely tackled by the media and almost never in depth. Now, such stories have become commonplace.
We wrote this book about the history of American sports journalism because we are lifelong fans of sports, having grown up as kids avidly reading newspaper sports pages and listening to games on radio and seeing them on television. Sports stars were our heroes whom we hoped one day to emulate.
