“If I were asked to define as concisely as possible the subject of statistical mechanics, my response would be something like the following:

Statistical mechanics is the quantum mechanics of large systems and their subsystems in situations involving incompletely known wavefunctions.

This, of course, is too brief and too sweeping a statement to be of real value, but it is not too bad as some kind of an opening statement. It tells us where to start from and where to look into in order to have a working idea of statistical mechanics.

In numerous situations of interest, however, statistical mechanics involves classical considerations. In the following chapters I will indicate on several occasions the extent to which statistical mechanics can be reduced to classical terms. In particular, what goes by the name of classical statistical mechanics will be seen to correspond to a certain limit of quantum statistical mechanics. However, in deference to an existing tradition, I am going to adopt a course the other way round, and have a look at statistical mechanics, using classical mechanics as our launching pad. This will give us a preview of statistical mechanics.”
