ew Orleans in late July is sweltering, even with the air conditioner going full blast. It was eighty-two degrees in
Denver when I left this morning, but there are currently three digits on my dashboard’s temperature gauge. Fresh from
the airport, I tossed on a button-down shirt and jeans after my shower, hoping to get there in time.
Luxury SUVs and trucks already line the street outside my friend Caleb’s house, all large enough to transport the build of
professional athletes. Fuck. Coach Rice must have let them out of training camp early. I missed the first day, wanting to attend a
doctor’s appointment with my father before leaving town. I needed to know he was okay before leaving him alone in Colorado.
Okay, not exactly alone. He has a private nurse and a housekeeper secure enough in her job to argue with him when he’s being
stubborn. A close friend of mine, Ben, is a doctor and has offered to swing by to check on him if needed. He’s more than
covered, but I wish his stubborn ass would come to stay with me.
