Excerpt from Steam and Other Engines Construction of the cylinder. - The cylinder is constructed with various passages, or ports, formed in it so that the steam may flow as required. The distribution of the steam first to one side and then to the other side of the piston is effected by means of valves, of which there are many varieties. These valves are opened and closed at the proper instants by means of a mechanism driven from the crank shaft, so that the engine is self-acting. A common form of cylinder is shown in section in Fig. 2. A is the cylinder, made of cast-iron, and fitted with a cast-iron piston B. 0 is the piston rod, secured firmly to the piston, and passing through a hole D in the cylinder end. A box E of rectangular shape, called the steam chest, is cast on to the side of the cylinder, and is provided with a movable cover.
