Texas, seven years earlier
I decided to kill my father that awful afternoon, just three weeks after I
turned sixteen. It was about 5:15 on what had started off as a typical
school day. Only moments earlier I had looked up from the last chapter of
that week’s twentieth century English lit homework, Baroness Orczy’s
Scarlet Pimpernel, just as my three-limo convoy drove through the main
gate of Cthulhu Meadows Ranch. My limo had turned unexpectedly and my
subconscious gave me a mental nudge.
I did most of my homework in the mornings or afternoons during the
hour-long commutes traveling between my father’s mammoth spread and
The Margaret Moffette Lea School for Virtuous Young Ladies of Quality where
I had recently started my junior year. The moment dinner was over I
planned to download and view the 1934 film version of The Scarlet
Pimpernel just to see how well Leslie Howard had played the dual roles of
heroic master of disguise and fashion-obsessed fop. Reading that book
brought home viscerally for me both how important it was to present
oneself fashionably if one was to be accepted by society and how deeply I
loathed school uniforms.
