The field of oncofertility began with an
urgent unmet need – the fertility concerns
of young cancer patients. Today, due to the
research and clinical interventions documented
in prior books, the field of oncofertility
has matured. Now, clear didactics are
needed to ensure that clinicians who are
new to this field of medicine can quickly
come up to speed with treatment strategies.
In this first ever Textbook of Oncofertility
Research and Practice, the coeditors
and coauthors met this need with two
kinds of chapters. First, in the didactic
chapters, questions are posed that are
instructional and provide the best evidence
available on each of the subjects.
They may also provide a springboard
toward new research or improvements in
clinical care. The second chapter type is
represented by case studies. Every oncofertility
case differs significantly based on the
age of the individual, expectations about
fertility needs, timing, and the type of cancer
care, and this complexity is detailed in
each chapter. As a collection, they represent
the best thinking of clinicians who
have been on the frontline of oncofertility
care since its inception. In the end, we
hope these chapters and the case studies
enable the kind of learning that is enduring
and propels the field forward.
