Emergency Medicine continues to evolve as a fundamental specialty
within the house of Medicine. We are one of the few specialties that
are willing to manage all presentations, no matter what method of
arrival, what type of patient or what time of day. Paediatric
Emergency Medicine is a key component of general Emergency
Medicine practice. This has become more evident as it becomes
increasingly difficult for families to access care for children on an
emergent basis.
Most paediatric presentations are straightforward, single system
problems that can be easily managed according to established
guidelines. However, a small number of children are very ill, or
potentially complicated, and require specialised knowledge and
skills to manage safely. This can be anxiety-provoking for parents,
children and clinicians. Successful assessment and management of
these cases is hugely rewarding and satisfying. However,
mismanagement of a single case can have devastating
consequences. The aim of this text is to provide a structured,
consensus-based approach to common emergency presentations,
important rare emergencies, and to describe administrative and
organisational issues for Emergency Departments.

assessment and resuscitation following cardiac arrest, sepsis and
other critical illnesses and update approaches to important advances
such as bedside ultrasound, management of behavioural
disturbance, clinical teaching and research. The evidence base for
Paediatric Emergency Medicine continues to improve with

being driven by a number of national and international paediatric
research networks, and the global Pediatric Emergency Research
