Principles of Addiction Medicine. Our goal, as with previous editions of Principles, is to provide a reference text that reflects the state of the art in the science and practice of addiction medicine. This goal is supported through the textbook’s link to the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), the world’s largest addiction medicine professional association, and through the involvement of the world’s leading researchers and experts in our field. This edition of Principles is being released soon after the accreditation of the American Board of Addiction Medicine’s first fellowships in Addiction Medicine. With this and other developments, including legislation in the United States that promotes parity with other medical conditions in health insurance coverage, addiction medicine continues its movement toward improved integration into the mainstream of health care. We hope that this edition facilitates that movement.
The text is organized pyramidally under editor, coeditors, section editors, and authors. As in our last edition, coeditors Richard Saitz, MD, FASAM, and David Fiellin, MD, strengthen our links to patient-oriented research, internal medicine, and primary care and Shannon Miller, MD, FASAM, DFAPA, continues with his strengths in psychiatry and neuroscience and editorial links to ASAM’s peer-reviewed medical journal, Journal of Addiction Medicine (JAM). Richard Ries, MD, has worked on all of the previous editions of Principles and brings special expertise in co-occurring psychiatric disorders and knowledge of how addiction treatment services function in community settings.
With this new edition of Principles of Addiction Medicine, ASAM continues its publishing partnership with Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW). This platform will enable Principles to reach a more global audience than ever before, with information for professionals about best practices and evidence-based principles relating to addiction medicine. The editors have been pleased to work with LWW in the development and printing of this new edition.
