John the Baptist was the forerunner for Jesus who was sent to prepare the
way by preparing people’s hearts to receive what the Lord was bringing
to earth — salvation through His Son and the redemption of mankind.
In Matthew 3:11, John told the crowds, “I indeed baptize you with water
unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose
shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost,
and with fire”
The word “baptize” in Matthew 3:11 is the Greek word baptidzo, which
means to baptize; to fully immerse. Originally, it meant to dip and dye. In
early usage, it described the process of dipping a cloth or garment into a vat of
color to dye it, leaving it there long enough for the material to soak up the new
color, and then pulling that garment out of the dye with a permanently changed
outward appearance.
When the Holy Spirit baptized you into Christ in the new birth, you
were placed into Christ, and you “emerged” a new creature in Christ (see 2
Corinthians 5:17). Subsequent to that experience, there is another baptism
God desires that you experience: the baptism in the Holy Spirit. When
Jesus baptizes you in the Holy Spirit, He immerses you deeply in His
Spirit. He allows you to become so saturated in Him that when you come
out, you are infused with His power to live a Spirit-filled, Spirit-led life of
victory on earth in the face of every dark challenge and obstacle.
