'If I could keep only one book on the Battle of Britain, it would be this one.' Former Chairman of The Spitfire Society. Now I realise that some of you will think there are more than enough books about the events in the skies above the British Isles in the summer of 1940. But you'd probably also have to admit that not all authors agree on even the most basic aspects of the Battle, while the statistics are changing all the time. I'm not promising that my book will solve all these problems, but I've tried to cut through the confusion to produce a concise narrative with embedded illustrations that will, I hope, appeal equally to those well versed in the subject and those new to it. The text is based on the scripts for two of my talks, The Battle of Britain and Pilots of the Battle of Britain, and as I unfold the story of the opposing forces, their equipment and tactics, and the Battle itself, I highlight the stories of a cross-section of pilots, some well known, others unheralded. These include the inspiration for much of my life and writing, Pilot Officer Laurie Whitbread, shot down and killed in September 1940; and two survivors I was privileged to meet, Squadron Leaders Geoffrey Wellum and Tony Iveson. Finally, I aim to highlight the historical importance of the Battle and provide a fitting tribute to all those that sacrificed their lives to give Hitler his first bloody nose. Once again, the cover design is by Martin Butler. You can read about my career and writing on my website: www.ronpowell.co.uk
