The landscape most familiar to me in my homeland state of Illinois was one of cornfields and
soybean crops. Flatness reigned supreme, and thunderstorms rolled across the farmlands. I grew
up in Illinois, central Illinois, but it was my time in southern Illinois - where bottomlands,
swamps, and forests thrive - that may have enchanted me the deepest, in the Land of the Big
Muddy Monster.
I will never forget how beautiful I found Little Egypt, as the area is called, the first time I
fully took it in.
I was traveling leisurely farther south, on a two-lane road that cut straight through the rolling
hills of the region. During that drive, a deep emotional feeling overwhelmed me when the car
topped the crest of the first big ridge. Stretched out in front of me, as far as the eye could see in
the remarkable sunshine, were slopes after knolls of bright yellow fields of daffodils. It reminded
me of the scene of the poppy fields in The Wizard of Oz.
In that classic movie the poppies symbolized the dangers of being distracted through sleep
and apathy from the Yellow Brick Road, which leads to the goals of the travelers' journey.
Daffodils have a different meaning, representing rebirth and new beginnings. For me, southern
Illinois would be a revival and renewal of my cryptozoological roots. What swept out before me
were new adventures, new research, and new findings in a new realm of exploration, awakening
my desire to discover more.
I was anxious to find out more about this mysterious Little Egypt. What was revealed was
mystical links of which folks are little aware.
The Southern Triangle of Illinois forms an area given the name “Little Egypt” or “Egypt.”
The Triangle encompasses nicely the southern third of the state of Illinois. With the area code
618, the southern part of Illinois is geographically, culturally, and economically distinct from the
