Bipolar II disorder is a highly misunderstood form of bipolar illness. By its very designation as type II, clinicians, patients, and the public often assume it is less impairing than bipolar I, “the real thing.”
Bipolar II is far more impairing than we once thought. It is characterized by lengthy and recurrent periods of depression, comorbid anxiety disorders, and high rates of substance and alcohol misuse. The occasional hypomanias of bipolar II—in which people experience elation and irritability, exuberance, increased energy, and reduced need to sleep—are not as impairing as the full manic episodes of bipolar I, but they can certainly have a negative impact on family members and friends. Moreover, for the person with the disorder, these high periods are often short-lived, and they do little to alleviate the suffering caused by depressive phases.
The self-management tools that have been developed for bipolar disorder—such as identifying early warning signs of mania and trying to prevent further escalation—are primarily meant for people with bipolar I disorder who have full remissions between episodes. One can find many self-help books that explain these strategies, but few address the needs that are specific to the bipolar II syndrome. This book fills this gap.
This workbook presents strategies for managing the depressive and hypomanic phases unique to bipolar II disorder. Some of these strategies, such as the use of thought restructuring and behavioral activation, may already be familiar to readers from the depression literature. This book expands upon these strategies and introduces novel approaches, such as the use of mindfulness and lifestyle management skills for mood episodes, and provides self-care tools for anxiety, a common co-occurring condition for people with bipolar II disorder. Readers will learn skills to create a personalized wellness plan with strategies for staying healthy.
