The Cesnola Collection of Cypriot Art was the first large group of antiquities to enter The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and it remains the most important representation of Cypriot antiquities outside of the island. In 2000, highlights of the Cesnola Collection were installed in four dedicated galleries. Numerous additional works are featured in the Greek and Roman Study Collection, which opened in 2007. Moreover, a comprehensive program to study and publish the Cesnola Collection was begun under the auspices of Carlos A. Picón, former Curator in Charge of the Department of Greek and Roman Art, with the collaboration of Vassos Karageorghis, former Director of the Department of Antiquities of the Republic of Cyprus. The publication program has been continued by Seán Hemingway, the John A. and Carole O. Moran Curator in Charge of the Department of Greek and Roman Art at The Met. With a collection of 5,365 inventoried objects, this has been a major undertaking. The volume on terracotta sculptures appeared in 2004 (and was republished in 2016), the volume on stone sculptures in 2014 (revised in 2015), and the volume on ancient glass in 2017. The present volume publishes a lesser-known but exceedingly informative part of the collection—the terracotta oil lamps.
