On 28 June 1914 in Sarajevo, a Bosnian Serb student shot the heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The assassination plunged the world into a global conflict that was to scar human history and redefine the meaning of the word war .

War in Western Europe

1914

It was essential, if Germany’s so-called Schlieffen Plan were to succeed, that the threat posed by France should be neutralised before Russia could bring its lumbering military machine into play. Germany was well aware that war on two fronts, in the East and in the West, would stretch its resources to their limits, so speed was of the essence. The aim was to overwhelm France through a lightning-quick attack through neutral Belgian territory and turn southwards in order to encircle the French army on the German border.

In fact it was a modified version of the Schlieffen Plan that was put into action when seven German field armies, under the command of the generals Karl von Bülow and Alexander von Kluck, launched their attack on Belgium on 4 August 1914. The tiny territory of the Duchy of Luxembourg, which had stood in the Germans’ way, had been taken two days before, and was allowed to retain its independence throughout the war.
