Preface
The purpose of this book is twofold. First, it is a study that defends the credibility of
both science and religion, and relates and compares the credibility criteria of both.
Second, the book is to show that this ramifed topic can be built up in a rigorous
axiomatic and systematic way by providing axioms and defnitions and by proving
theorems from them. Chapter 1 describes scientifc and religious belief systems
and defends man’s ability for basic religious knowledge concerning some higher
spiritual power and conscience. Chapter 2 provides an axiomatization about nat-
ural goods, natural and moral law, and conscience. Chapter 3 compares scientifc
and religious belief systems. After introducing relevant deduction and verisimili-
tude they are applied to scientifc and religious propositions and norms concerning
their credibility. Further topics discussed are upper and lower bound of credibility,
internal and external consistency, local refutation, complementation, superseding
and surpassing among scientifc and religious belief systems. Chapters 3.7–3.9 com-
pare the three Abrahamic religions with Eastern religions and among themselves.
After giving general features of religions, chapter 4 deals with the credibility re-
quirements of science towards religion, its compatibility with scientifc results, its
methodology compared to scientifc standards, the question of its exceeding the
lower bound of credibility, and its commitment to dogma. Chapter 5 deals with the
credibility requirements of religion towards science, after discussing common as-
sumptions of all sciences. The credibility of science sufers from a reduction to one
type of causality, from its rejection of teleological causality and teleological expla-
nation, from its neglection of mental causality and from an omission of downward
causality.
