Although written under anonymously, the writer of the famous quartet of famous First World War sea-reportage novels, was identified as Rev. Montague T. Hainsselin. He was appointed to the chaplaincy of the Royal Navy in 1903, although he had been almost born into the Navy having raised in Plymouth.
