The following letter to the reader sums everything here up:
Welcome back, dear reader, to the final installment of theSurprise! Dukes adventure.
In most cases, when I write you a letter at the beginning of a
book, it’s because there’s some bit of historical inaccuracy I
can’t wait until the end of the book to point out, because it’s
just so ridiculous I have to acknowledge it at the beginning.
That’s not what this is.
Well, actually, now that I say that, I do have one important
note of clarity. Throughout my writing, and this book very
much in particular, I use the description “lad” to mean any
teenaged male. Why? Because if I call them “teen-aged
males” you’d start rolling your eyes at me.
But I should point out that while “teenager” is a 20th
century word, English speakers have been using “teen” to
describe someone “of teen-aged years” (i.e., their age ends
in a -teen) since the early 1800s. But I think you’ll agree it’s
a hell of a lot easier to just call them “lad”, eh?...
and it goes on for a while.
