The End Of August A Novel Yu Miri Morgan Giles Translation by Yu Miri, Morgan Giles (translation) instant download after payment.

An extraordinary, ground-breaking, epic multi-generational novel about a Korean family living under Japanese occupation.

In 1930s Japanese-occupied Korea, Lee Woo-cheol was a running prodigy & a contender for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. But he would have had to run under the Japanese flag.

Nearly a century later, his granddaughter is living in Japan & training to run a marathon herself. She summons Korean shamans to hold an intense, transcendent ritual to connect with Lee Woo-cheol. When his ghost appears, alongside those of his brother Lee Woo-Gun, & their young neighbor, who was forced to become a comfort woman to Japanese soldiers stationed in China during World War II, she must uncover their stories to free their souls. What she discovers is at the heart of this sweeping, majestic novel about a family that endured death, love, betrayal, war, political upheaval, & ghosts, both vengeful & wistful.

A poetic masterpiece that is a feat of historical fiction, epic family saga, & mind-bending story-telling acrobatics, The End of August is a marathon of literature.

Yu Miri (AKA Miri Yu) is a multi-award-winning Japanese author of Korean descent from Yokohama. Her work engages with topics such as Japan’s high suicide rate, the neglect of children, & the troubles faced by those of arguably ambiguous national identity, such as the zainichi kankokujin group (ethnic Koreans born & raised in Japan). Yu has won numerous awards, including the coveted Akutagawa Prize in 1997 for Kazoku Shinema (Family Cinema), & has a vast readership in both Japan & South Korea. In 2002, Gold Rush appeared in an English translation by Stephen Snyder. Tilted Axis Press released the English translation of Yu’s 2014 JR Ueno-eki koen-guchi (Tokyo Ueno Station) in 2019. Morgan Giles’s English translation won the 2020 National Book Award for Translated Literature.
