This work was first born of my interest derived from the general looting of the archaeological goods that Mexico has suffered throughout history. Concerning the Sacred Cenote of Chichén Itzá, it can be considered the one with the most defined limits in terms of physical space and time with respect to a particular looting, the one carried out with an amazing liberality, efficiency and impunity by the American consul in Mérida Eric H. Thompson from the end of the 19th century until the first quarter of the 20th century. This dispossession, very serious while Mexico's rights were seriously affected, even though his government made unsuccessful attempts to reach a fair settlement with the Peabody Museum of Harvard University, who until now holds ownership of archaeological relics. As a result of this looting, the revolutionary government of Plutarco Elías Calles sought by judicial means the return of the pieces of the Sacred Cenote, as a way of symbolically extolling a glorious past of the indigenous people to whom the Revolution should attend and raise their well-being . It is not surprising, since all governments that promote the recovery of their stolen heritage have very important support in the recovery and explanation of their own past. As a student of the themes of that time in Mexico, especially the biographies of some of its main a actors, working on the Sacred Cenote of Chichen Itza served a double purpose: to know the historical scope of his looting, and place it in its rightful place in the political symbology of a country. This work, whose research and writing took me three years, was possible thanks to the cooperation of public archives of Mexico (General Archive of the Nation, Archive of the Supreme Court of Justice, Historical-Diplomatic Archive, House of Legal Culture of Mérida ) and the Peabody Museum Archive, as well as various libraries and libraries in both Mexico and the United States.
