Book published in two languages – English and Russian

This book is the first full complete publication of the results of archaeological survey of the fortification system in Eastern Mongolia, Russia (Transbaikalia) and China (Inner Mongolia). The fortification system includes a wall more than 750 km long and systems of more 50 small fortresses located in the south from the wall. It is proved that this system was built during the Khitan Liao empire (907–1125). Relations between the Liao empire and the northern nomads of Eastern Mongolia and Transbaikalia are discussed.
